Murals adorning public spaces blossomed in the first years after the Mexican revolution. The muralists, most famously Orozco, Siqueros, and Rivera, were politically committed to celebrating the history and lives of the Mexican people in their frescoes. Independently, each was invited to bring their visions and expertise to public venues across Northern America. This class will familiarize you with the aesthetic and political backgrounds of the artists and their partnerships with students, university trustees, Edsel Ford and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Those murals which remain on display in in New York, New Hampshire, Detroit and California will be emphasized.
